Cedar City Regional Airport handles roughly 115,000 takeoffs and landings a year without an on-site air traffic control tower.
On busy days, airport manager Tyler Galetka says activity can reach about 650 aircraft movements.
Commercial flights, Southern Utah University student pilots and an air tanker base share the airspace, putting safety at the center of expansion plans.
Airport leaders say a tower would improve local coordination, now supported by controllers based elsewhere.
But construction could take seven years and cost $20 million to $22 million, leaving officials to seek state, federal and local funding.
Terminal upgrades have added seating, restrooms and space for two commercial flights at once.
Officials also hope to add routes beyond Salt Lake City, though competition from Las Vegas and airline demand present challenges.
More service could benefit residents and local businesses, but keeping pace with existing traffic remains the immediate concern. Read More... |

Secret Little Hack |
Use Cedar City as Your Secret Base Camp for Five National Parks in One Trip
Most travelers book separate hotels near each Utah national park and spend a fortune, but locals know that Cedar City sits within a two-hour radius of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches — making it the single most strategically located town in the entire state.
Rather than chasing availability at crowded gateway towns like Springdale or Moab, plant your flag in Cedar City where lodging is significantly cheaper, dining options are genuinely local, and Southern Utah University keeps the town lively year-round.
The real insider move is to time your stay around the shoulder hours rather than shoulder seasons. Leave Cedar City by 5:30 a.m. for Bryce Canyon and you arrive before the parking lots fill, catch alpenglow on the hoodoos, and are back in town for a late breakfast — all before the tour buses have even finished their morning coffee.
Because Cedar City is an actual functioning town rather than a tourism bubble, your grocery runs, gas, and meals cost dramatically less, which means the money you save funds another full day of exploration that a budget-strapped visitor would have to skip. |
