Utah high school football brought Cedar City two very different playoff nights: a statement road win for Cedar and a painful home exit for Canyon View.

In the 3A football playoffs, the No. 9 Cedar Reds beat No. 8 North Sanpete 44-20, while No. 6 Canyon View fell 35-17 to No. 11 Manti.

Cedar wasted little time in Mount Pleasant, striking first when Colt Kelling connected with Hunter Burgess for a 93-yard touchdown.

Kelling later found Ryker Janes for a short score and ran in another, sending the Reds into halftime ahead 21-7.

After the break, Braxton DeMille added two rushing touchdowns, and Burgess turned an 80-yard punt return into another Cedar score.

Cody Stevenson’s late field goal helped seal a win that showed the Reds could make big plays in every phase.

The reward is a tougher road test: Cedar advances to face top-seeded Morgan in the 3A quarterfinals.

For a team that entered the postseason seeded ninth, that matchup is both a steep challenge and an earned opportunity.

Back in Cedar City, Canyon View appeared ready to repeat its regular-season victory over Manti.

Owen Williams threw two touchdown passes to Preston Higgins, and Jackson Beckstrom added a field goal as the Falcons built a 17-7 third-quarter lead.

Then the game turned: Manti closed the gap before scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

It was a crushing reversal for the Falcons, whose season ended at 7-4 despite holding a double-digit lead after halftime.

Manti moves on to meet No. 3 Logan in the quarterfinals.

The 1A football playoffs also brought a boost for southern Utah, as No. 9 Parowan overwhelmed No. 8 North Sevier 47-6.

The Rams now travel to face top-seeded Duchesne, while Gunnison visits Kanab and Enterprise heads to Beaver in other 1A quarterfinals.

In the 1A eight-player bracket, No. 10 Panguitch won 43-24 on the road against Utah Military Academy Hill Field.

That victory carried extra satisfaction after Panguitch lost on the same field earlier this season.

The Bobcats next visit No. 2 Milford, while Water Canyon hosts Whitehorse.

With Cedar, Parowan and Panguitch still playing, the region has plenty to watch as the quarterfinals begin.

I feel for the Canyon View seniors. Holding a double digit lead at halftime and losing in the fourth is a rough way to go out.

donna_kYeah the seniors are the ones I feel worst for. Underclassmen get another shot. Those graduating guys had to walk off the field knowing that was it. Really tough.

Three teams from this area still alive in the playoffs. Good week for southern Utah football all around.

Greg SorensonSeriously. Cedar, Parowan and Panguitch all moving on is a great result. Going to be a fun weekend watching all three quarterfinal games.

Panguitch winning on that same field where they lost earlier this year is some serious redemption. Love to see it.

BobcatFan_PanguitchThat detail makes it so much sweeter honestly. Losing there earlier in the year and then coming back in the playoffs and winning by 19? That is a great story.

47 to 6 for Parowan and people are still sleeping on us. Duchesne better be ready.

An 80 yard punt return on top of a 93 yard touchdown catch? Hunter Burgess had quite the night.

Janice FowlerKid is something special. A 93 yarder AND an 80 yard return in the same game is just ridiculous. Hope he stays healthy for Morgan.

My son played for the Falcons this year. That fourth quarter collapse is going to sting for a long time. Still proud of those boys though.

canyon_view_dadSame here. My daughter cheers for CV and those boys played their hearts out all season. A 7-4 record is nothing to hang your heads about. Hold those memories tight.

That Canyon View fourth quarter was so hard to watch. Up 17-7 and then just nothing. Heartbreaking way to end a season.

Rick T.Agreed, that fourth quarter was brutal. Three scores in a row and it felt like it happened so fast. Hate to see it end that way for those kids.

So proud of these Cedar kids. Being seeded ninth and going on the road to pull that off is no small thing.

Morgan is going to be a tough one but honestly after that performance I think the Reds have a shot. Don't count them out.

shelby_cedarMorgan is no joke but Cedar is peaking at the right time. If they can move the ball like that against North Sanpete they can move it against anyone. Cautiously optimistic.

That 93 yard touchdown on the first drive had me losing my mind. Cedar came to play from the jump.

Travis M.Right? Set the tone immediately. North Sanpete had to be rattled after that and it showed. Cedar never really looked back after that first drive.
