For Cedar City families, a high school athlete college credit opportunity now comes with a familiar setting: the playing field.

Southern Utah University is extending its athletic credit program beyond the Utah Summer Games to qualifying sporting events on campus.

Eligible juniors and seniors can earn three elective college credits for competing, with a $30 program fee.

The arrangement turns organized competition into an early step toward higher education.

The program began with sanctioned team participation at the Utah Summer Games, where 80 athletes took part in its first round.

Its expansion opens the door to more qualifying high school competitions at SUU, not just the summer games.

To qualify, athletes must compete in two different sports or event categories through Utah high school association competitions, the Utah Summer Games, or both.

Students can receive no more than three credits per academic year through the program.

For athletes already traveling to Cedar City, the opportunity adds an academic reason to take their time on campus seriously.

The price may feel especially meaningful to parents trying to manage the cost of college before graduation.

A Parowan High School track and field athlete who joined the summer program described the credits as a head start tied to a sport he loves.

His family's experience captures the appeal of sports college credit: students can build on something they already do, rather than add an entirely separate activity.

University leaders point to teamwork, resilience and performing under pressure as skills that carry from sports into classrooms and jobs.

Still, not every competition automatically qualifies, so students should confirm event eligibility and program requirements before counting on elective college credits.

For southern Utah athletes, the broader takeaway is simple: a trip to compete at SUU could also move their education forward.

Does anyone know if club sports count or is it strictly through the high school association? My son does club soccer and I want to make sure before we get our hopes up.

This is such a cool idea for kids who are already putting in the time with their sport. Nice to see SUU doing something like this for local families.

30 bucks for 3 college credits is honestly a steal. Tuition at most places is way more than that per credit.

Brett OlsenSeriously. My sister paid like $400 per credit hour at her school. Three credits for $30 is basically nothing.
