A pickup truck rollover left a gray Ford F-150 upside down beside state Route 14 in Cedar Canyon on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened shortly before 2 in the afternoon near the turnoff to Right Hand Canyon Road, a few miles east of Cedar City.

The truck was traveling west when the driver reached down for something inside the cab, according to preliminary information from troopers.

His attention shifted from the road, and he lost control before the pickup rolled onto a berm along the highway’s north side.

No other vehicle was involved in the single vehicle crash, a detail that limits the immediate impact but hardly softens the close call.

The driver climbed out through a broken side window without assistance after the truck stopped upside down.

Troopers said he had not been wearing a seat belt when the rollover occurred.

His escape without reported injuries is especially striking.

He declined medical transport, and no injuries were reported at the scene.

The pickup, however, was heavily damaged and had to be removed by tow truck.

Personnel from the Utah Highway Patrol, the Forest Service and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.

Distracted driving does not always involve a phone; reaching for an item can be enough to take a driver’s eyes off the road.

The outcome here was a wrecked truck rather than a reported injury, but that should not be mistaken for a safe margin.

The circumstances described by troopers remain preliminary, and the full picture of what happened may change as the crash is reviewed.

For drivers coming down Cedar Canyon, the lesson is plain: find what you need before setting off, or pull over before searching the cab.

Glad he walked away but no seat belt in a rollover is just wild to me. Trucks do not protect you like people think they do.

reaching for something in the cab. Could have just pulled over at the Right Hand Canyon turnoff which was literally right there

I drive that stretch of 14 all the time and it is not forgiving at all. One little mistake out there and you are in the dirt fast.

Sandra KowalskiSame. That canyon has some tricky spots especially coming around those curves near the bottom. No room for error at all.

No seat belt and no injuries after rolling an F-150. That guy used up about ten years of luck in one afternoon.
