Southern Utah University has named Emily Sage Wheeler, a musical theatre major from Grace, Idaho, as the 2026 valedictorian, honoring her remarkable academic excellence and vibrant leadership in the arts.
Wheeler’s achievement marks the result of four years dedicated to mastering both her craft and studies within SUU’s nationally acclaimed musical theatre program.
Balancing challenging coursework with roles in acclaimed productions, she has become a standout in Cedar City’s thriving arts scene and a testament to SUU’s reputation as a performing arts hub.
Her selection celebrates not just high grades, but also inspiring contributions to campus life.

Pickle & Play, a new 26,000-square-foot family fun center, is nearing completion in Cedar City.
The community is invited to a public “topping off” party this Thursday, where guests can sign the final steel truss before it’s placed on the roof.
Owner Spencer Eaton encourages everyone to stop by from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for free food, prizes, and family-friendly activities, including drawings for pickleball paddles and gift cards.
The facility will feature six indoor pickleball courts, a roller skating rink, mini golf, virtual reality rooms, party rooms, and concessions, with plans to open by December.
Local pickleball expert Jeremy Waite expressed excitement about the new courts and expanded options for leagues and clinics.

The Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games brought energy to Cedar City as 21 water polo teams from across Utah competed at Southern Utah University.
Cyprus excelled in the 18U Boys' Division, defeating Utah County 13-11 to claim gold after a dramatic semifinal victory over top-seeded Bear River.
On the girls' side, Canyon View maintained an undefeated run, scoring 84 goals and dominating Bear River 11-5 for the 18U championship.
Other champions included Bear River in the 14U Mixed, while Spartans from Murray took top honors in both the 10U and 12U brackets.
USG Sport Coordinator Rob Small stressed how the tournament energizes Utah water polo and attracts regional teams, fueling anticipation for the state tourney.

Southern Utah University has named Dr. Mary Pearson as its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, bringing 27 years of higher education experience and innovative leadership to the role.
Previously SUU’s VP for Finance and Administration, Dr. Pearson is celebrated for dramatically increasing business school enrollment and career placement, and spearheading over $12.6 million in fundraising efforts.
A two-time SUU alumna and Certified Public Accountant, she’s held positions as professor, dean, and executive, and has served on high-profile boards including the Governor's Utah Economic Council.
She succeeds interim provost Shauna Mendini and will officially start July 1, 2026, focusing on academic leadership, faculty engagement, and advancing student success.
Cedar City, the home of SUU, continues to thrive, with new Smith’s Marketplace locations and Hive Plastics’ multimillion-dollar facility driving local economic growth and opportunity.
