Sheep take over Main Street during the Cedar Livestock and Heritage Festival, giving Cedar City a lively reminder of its ranching roots.
For families watching the parade, it is a memorable sight; for ranchers, it represents work that continues year-round.
The festival also features tractor and horse pulls, a ranch rodeo, cowboy poetry, music, quilts, vendors and a Dutch oven contest.
Many activities have taken place at the Cross Hollows Event Center.
Sheep have been part of the surrounding ranges since their arrival from Colorado around 1890, building on Iron County’s agricultural history dating to Cedar City’s settlement in 1851.
That history makes the parade more than a spectacle: it brings a living local tradition into the heart of town.
Previous festival details listed free admission, but visitors should check current dates, hours and activities before heading out. Read More... |

Q/A Questions |
Q: Cedar City sits at a surprisingly high elevation — does that affect daily life there?
A: Absolutely. At roughly 5,800 feet above sea level, Cedar City experiences cooler summers than most of Utah's lower desert cities, which makes it a welcome refuge from the heat. The altitude also means winters can bring significant snowfall, and newcomers often notice they get winded more easily until they acclimatize.
Q: Is Cedar City really considered an astronomy destination, or is that just local boosterism?
A: It genuinely earns the title. The surrounding Iron County has some of the darkest skies in the continental United States, and Cedar City serves as a practical base for visiting nearby dark-sky parks like Cedar Breaks National Monument. The region's low humidity and high elevation cut down on atmospheric interference, making stargazing exceptionally clear on most nights.
Q: What draws people to Cedar City beyond the Utah Shakespeare Festival?
A: The city functions as an underrated hub for outdoor adventure. Within a short drive, visitors can access five national parks and monuments, red-rock slot canyons, and high-alpine trails above 10,000 feet. Southern Utah University also gives the small city a youthful energy and a surprisingly active arts scene that extends well beyond the famous summer theater festival. |
On a clear Cedar City night, Ashcroft Observatory offers a free chance to slow down and explore the sky above southern Utah.
The public observatory sits on a hilltop south of Southern Utah University at 745 Westview Drive, welcoming students and neighbors alike.
Built in the 1970s for community learning, it has traditionally offered Monday viewing from 8 to 10 at night, with opportunities to spot constellations and more distant sights.
SUU’s alumni association has also held free, ticketed Thursday gatherings, but those student events are separate from regular public viewing.
Weather affects what visitors can see, and hours or event arrangements may change, so check current details before heading uphill and bring a layer for the cool evening air.
No astronomy expertise is needed—just curiosity and a little time to look up. Read More... |
Tip of The Day |
Chase Cedar City's "Island in the Sky" Light Windows
Cedar City sits at roughly 5,800 feet elevation, sandwiched between the Mojave Desert heat below and the high plateaus above — which creates a surprisingly rare atmospheric condition locals call "clearout days." After a passing storm scrubs the air clean, the town gets crystalline visibility that photographers and stargazers rarely find in lower-elevation Utah towns.
If you're visiting or planning a trip, check the forecast for a day immediately following rain or snow, then drive fifteen minutes east toward Cedar Breaks National Monument. The post-storm light hitting the amphitheater's red and orange hoodoos at that elevation is dramatically different from a standard sunny afternoon — shadows cut sharper, colors saturate more deeply, and the horizon stretches into Nevada and Arizona simultaneously.
Even if you stay in town, that same post-storm window makes Cedar City one of the most accessible spots in the Southwest for naked-eye stargazing — it's an International Dark Sky Community, meaning city ordinances actively limit light pollution. Step outside the night after a storm clears and look up before the next weather system rolls in. You won't need any equipment, just a jacket and some time. |

For an unforgettable Italian dining experience in Cedar City, Chef Alfredo's Ristorante Italiano is a destination worth savoring.
This locally loved restaurant combines authentic Italian recipes, exceptional service, and an elegant white-tablecloth atmosphere that's perfect for date nights, anniversaries, birthdays, or any special occasion.
The menu features handcrafted favorites including five delicious varieties of ravioli, pillowy homemade gnocchi, rich pasta dishes, and perfectly prepared filet mignon, all made with premium ingredients and classic Italian flavors.
With an impressive 4.6-star rating and more than 520 Google reviews, it's easy to see why this Cedar City favorite has earned a reputation as one of Southern Utah's premier fine dining destinations.
