Cedar City families are preparing for a major change as the Iron County School District transitions to a four-day school week starting in the 2027-28 academic year.
After months of heated public forums and a narrow board vote, the shift reflects widespread support from both parents and staff who favored more flexibility and improved morale for educators.
This decision follows similar moves in nearby districts like Garfield County, fueling local conversations about modernizing rural education.
While many parents welcome the schedule shift, concerns remain about potential disruptions to childcare, lunch programs, and routines for younger students.
Local real estate agents note that changing school schedules could influence families’ decisions to move to Cedar City.
The district promises more details on daily schedules and support services before the rollout, aiming to balance community needs with educational goals. Read More... |

Tip of The Day |
Visit Cedar City's Frontier Homestead for a Surprisingly Rich History Lesson
Most visitors to Cedar City rush straight toward Brian Head or Bryce Canyon, but the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum right in town is worth a dedicated stop. It holds one of the largest collections of horse-drawn vehicles in the American West — think antique wagons, carriages, and stagecoaches that were actually used across Utah's iron-rich landscape.
Before you go, check the museum's schedule for living history demonstrations, where interpreters show hands-on skills like blacksmithing and pioneer crafts. Arriving early on a weekday dramatically reduces crowds, and the admission is low enough that it won't dent your travel budget. Pair the visit with a walk through the adjacent historic downtown to get a full picture of how this town evolved from an iron-smelting outpost into the arts hub it is today. |

In Cedar City, the Happy Factory Cedar City is alive with volunteers crafting wooden toys meant to brighten children’s lives worldwide.
Neighbors of all ages gather in this humble workshop, sanding, assembling, and painting toys that serve as cherished gifts of hope for children in need.
Much of the wood comes as donated scrap from local cabinet shops and manufacturers, repurposed into toys instead of going to waste.
Recent open house and fundraiser events brought new supporters and familiar faces together, allowing families to tour the workshop, watch toy making firsthand, and even join in.
This open-door spirit means anyone can contribute—whether for an hour or as a regular volunteer. Read More... |

Secret Little Hack |
Skip the Crowded Trailheads — Use Cedar City as a Ghost-Season Base Camp
Most visitors treat Cedar City as a pit stop on the way to Zion or Bryce Canyon, but locals know that the week after Labor Day, the surrounding Iron County trails — particularly those climbing into the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness — empty out almost entirely while temperatures drop to perfect hiking range.
Hotels in Cedar City drop their rates by 30 to 40 percent during this window because the tourist algorithm still treats it as a secondary destination.
The real insider move: book a room in Cedar City proper rather than near the park entrances, and you can day-trip into both Zion and Bryce in the same weekend without the $35-per-vehicle entry fees eating you alive.
Cedar City itself sits in a county that borders neither park's fee zone, so your drive starts in free territory. Pair that with a mid-week visit to the Cedar Breaks National Monument, which charges a separate fee but offers a free annual pass window each September during their quiet ranger appreciation events. Ask at the visitor center directly — it is rarely advertised online. |
