Uhrich's 30-Point Performance Propels Southern Utah Over UT Arlington

Thunderbirds Secure Third Consecutive Victory in WAC Play

In a thrilling home game on January 29, the Southern Utah women's basketball team clinched a 77-68 victory over UT Arlington, marking their third consecutive win in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). This triumph elevates the Thunderbirds to a 6-3 conference record and 14-7 overall, while the Mavericks drop to 2-6 in the WAC and 8-12 overall.

Junior forward Ava Uhrich delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 30 points on an impressive 81.8% shooting from the field. She also contributed nine rebounds and four assists, showcasing her all-around game.

Supporting Uhrich, junior guard Brooklyn Fely added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore forward Kortney Doman dominated the boards with 11 rebounds and chipped in seven points.

The game began with Southern Utah launching an 8-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back fast breaks. Freshman guard Devyn Kiernan drained a three-pointer to extend the lead, and sophomore forward Sierra Chambers added two fast-break and-one layups, pushing the Thunderbirds ahead 21-13 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Thunderbirds' offense slowed, with sophomore guard Denver Anderson being the sole scorer for nearly six minutes. However, late baskets from Uhrich helped Southern Utah maintain a 30-24 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw senior guard Ashley Banks contributing key layups during a 9-4 run. Despite Uhrich's 13-point effort in the quarter and a buzzer-beater from Doman, UT Arlington remained within striking distance, trailing 53-47 entering the final period.

Uhrich continued her offensive onslaught in the fourth quarter, scoring the Thunderbirds' first five points and matching her career-high with six minutes remaining. Her efforts propelled Southern Utah to a double-digit lead, culminating in a 77-68 victory.

Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds will host Abilene Christian University on January 31 at 2:00 p.m. in the America First Event Center. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+.
