SUU STEM lab classroom hits the road, increases access to learning

A mobile classroom is bringing hands-on learning to rural schools and partners across the state

Southern Utah University (SUU) has unveiled the L.S. and Aline W. Skaggs Mobile STEM Laboratory, a 33-foot RV designed to deliver hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to rural schools and communities across the state.

STEM Center Director Dylan Kirklin expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, "I am excited to get one of the newest and coolest pieces of science equipment in the entire state into our rural communities." He emphasized the goal of providing top-tier STEM experiences directly to these areas.

The mobile lab is set to accompany STEM Center personnel to local schools and participate in makerspace fairs and STEM events statewide. This initiative aims to bridge educational gaps by bringing advanced learning opportunities to underserved regions.

Constructed on a custom-built RV chassis, the lab features both internal and external teaching spaces, screens and monitors, a working lab sink, and designated student work areas. Its adaptable design allows for a variety of teaching experiences, from interactive virtual reality sessions to mobile makerspaces and lessons on Enhanced Geothermal Systems.

Funding for the mobile lab was provided by the Aline and Sam Skaggs (ALSAM) Foundation, which not only financed the vehicle but also established an endowment for its upkeep. This support underscores a commitment to enhancing STEM education accessibility.

In addition to the mobile lab, SUU has been expanding its educational infrastructure. In April 2024, the university broke ground on a new 44,000-square-foot Music Center, set to open in fall 2026. This facility will include classrooms, a piano lab, a 510-seat concert hall, and recording studios, further enriching the campus and community.

These developments reflect SUU's dedication to providing diverse and innovative educational opportunities, ensuring that students in Cedar City and beyond have access to quality learning experiences.
