Thunderbirds Secure 28-7 Victory, Retain Rivalry Trophy |
Southern Utah University delivered a commanding performance, defeating Utah Tech University 28-7 in the annual Battle for the Ax at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George.
Running back Joshua Dye led the charge, amassing 204 rushing yards and scoring three touchdowns, including a remarkable 92-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Thunderbirds set the tone early, orchestrating an 11-play, 74-yard opening drive capped by Dye's 20-yard touchdown run.
A successful two-point conversion extended their lead to 8-0.
On Utah Tech's first offensive play, defensive back Mikey Allen intercepted quarterback Bronson Barben's pass, leading to a 35-yard field goal by kicker Jayden Rogers and an 11-0 advantage.
Utah Tech struggled to find rhythm, with two missed field goals and a turnover on downs deep in Southern Utah territory.
The Trailblazers' lone score came in the fourth quarter when Barben ran for a 4-yard touchdown.
Defensively, the Thunderbirds were formidable.
Linebacker Sebastian Adamski recorded 15 tackles, while defensive lineman Lando Brown contributed two sacks.
Southern Utah's defense held Utah Tech scoreless through three quarters, showcasing their dominance.
With this victory, Southern Utah improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the United Athletic Conference.
They are set to host Austin Peay at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City on November 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Utah Tech, now 1-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play, will remain at home to face North Alabama on November 1 at 2 p.m.
