Featuring the heritage theater events and highlights from the America250 Celebration |
The Orchestra of Southern Utah is set to honor the nation's 250th anniversary with a special concert titled "America in Harmony" on Thursday, February 19, at 7:30 PM at Cedar City's Heritage Theater.
The evening will commence with "The Star-Spangled Banner," paying homage to the nation's founding. This anthem, originating from Francis Scott Key's 1814 poem, was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1931.
Under the baton of Music Director Carylee Zwang, the program will traverse American musical history, from the Revolutionary era to the rise of jazz in the 20th century. This season's theme, "America's Playlist," delves into the rich tapestry of American musical traditions.
A highlight of the evening is George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," a piece that masterfully blends classical and jazz elements. Pianist Christian Bohnenstengel, a faculty member at Southern Utah University, will perform the piano solo, while Trevor Davis, Director of Woodwinds, will deliver the iconic clarinet opening.
Aaron Copland's "Rodeo Suite," composed in 1942 for choreographer Agnes DeMille, captures the essence of the American West. The John Mead Dance Company will accompany the orchestra, bringing the suite's movements to life. Since relocating to Cedar City in 2023, John Mead and Mei Chian Lim have established a professional dance company featuring local talent.
The program also features Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," conducted by Assistant Conductor David Jordan; Leroy Anderson's "Blue Tango"; Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer"; and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," performed with the vocal quartet SideNote. Additionally, the orchestra will present an arrangement of "Souvenir d’Amerique," based on "Yankee Doodle," by French composer Henry Vieuxtemps.
Tickets are available at myosu.org. Children over five are welcome with adult supervision. The Orchestra of Southern Utah is a community ensemble of professionals and dedicated amateurs committed to bringing live orchestral music to the region.
