Never Quit: Cedar Reds Triumph Over Manti to Secure 3A State Championship |
Cedar High School's football team clinches first state title in 75 years with a thrilling comeback victory. |
Cedar High School's football team achieved a historic milestone on Saturday, capturing their first state championship in 75 years with a dramatic 41-35 victory over the Manti Templars in the 3A state title game.
The game, held at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, saw the Reds overcome an early 21-7 deficit, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Senior quarterback Everett Kelling was instrumental in the comeback, rushing for four touchdowns and passing for another. His performance was pivotal in turning the tide for Cedar.
Reflecting on the journey, Kelling expressed, "We've got four years of hard work and just continuing to put the work in even though it didn't pay off, going 4-7 for three years in a row. To see all the work that we put in over the years and learning to start winning this year, I don't know if there's a better feeling in the world."
Head coach Tye Hiatt, in his second year leading the team, praised his players' commitment to a new standard and accountability, emphasizing the significance of their achievement.
The championship game was a high-octane affair, with both teams combining for nearly 1,100 yards of total offense and only three punts. Cedar's offense amassed 495 yards, while Manti recorded 596 yards.
In the final moments, Kelling's leadership was evident as he secured crucial first downs, allowing the Reds to run out the clock and seal their undefeated 13-0 season.
Reflecting on the physical toll, Kelling admitted, "Oh, this is the worst I've hurt probably my entire high school life. But you know what, whatever it takes. We ended up getting the W."
This victory not only marks a historic achievement for Cedar High School but also serves as a testament to the team's perseverance and unwavering spirit throughout the season. |
