Multiple crashes reported as snowstorm impacts Southern Utah roads |
Morning snowstorm triggered slide-offs and a highway closure in Iron County |
A powerful snowstorm swept through Southern Utah on Wednesday, leading to multiple vehicle accidents and hazardous road conditions across Iron County.
The National Weather Service issued a snow squall warning for the region, cautioning residents about sudden heavy snowfall and strong winds that could drastically reduce visibility. In Cedar City, wind gusts reached up to 75 mph, exacerbating the treacherous driving conditions.
The Utah Department of Transportation reported numerous crashes on major highways, including Interstate 15, as drivers struggled with the rapidly deteriorating weather. Authorities temporarily closed sections of the highway to clear accidents and ensure public safety. Residents were advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to stay updated on road conditions through official channels.
In addition to the immediate impact on transportation, the storm has raised concerns about potential avalanches in the Southern Mountains. An avalanche warning is in effect until Thursday morning, urging outdoor enthusiasts to exercise extreme caution and avoid steep slopes.
The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds has created unstable snowpack conditions, increasing the risk of both human-triggered and natural avalanches.
As Cedar City navigates the challenges posed by severe winter weather, the community's resilience and continued growth remain evident. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution during this period of inclement weather. |
