Cedar City is buzzing this fall as Julie Rogers art takes center stage at a local gallery, drawing in both seasoned collectors and curious residents.

Known far beyond Utah’s borders, Julie Rogers has become admired for her figure paintings and evocative pastel paintings that capture moments both personal and historic.

Her charming interpretations of Latter-day Saint pioneers remain a cherished highlight, but equally striking are her impressionistic approaches and luminous colors that seem to glow right off the canvas.

Recently, her work in oils has taken on renewed importance, with Rogers sharing that her earliest roots began in this medium and she’s delighted to bring that full circle in her current practice.

Living just up the road in Glendale, Rogers transforms daily moments on her ranch into stirring compositions, drawing inspiration from Long Valley’s ever-changing landscape—especially as autumn paints the cottonwoods in fiery hues.

Rogers’ philosophy is simple yet profound: it’s not the medium, but the foundational principles of art, that drive her creativity.

This open-minded approach, she says, gives her the freedom to switch between watercolors, oils, and pastels, making her body of work both diverse and accessible.

Her pieces do more than decorate—they invite onlookers to feel, reflect, and find beauty in everyday life.

Supporters in Cedar City welcome this show as an opportunity to spotlight local artistic talent while also connecting to wider cultural conversations across southern Utah.

Julie Rogers is also branching out with group retreats at her rural studio, offering visiting artists a chance to collaborate and learn amid breathtaking scenery.

Commission work dominates her schedule, including projects for major institutions and Temple artwork, but she finds equal fulfillment in mentoring up-and-coming artists.

The upcoming exhibition and reception promise to be a major event, underscoring the timeless appeal and emotional impact of Julie Rogers art in Cedar City’s evolving creative landscape.

An opening reception will be held at Kolob Gallery, located at 111 South Main Street in Cedar City, Utah, on September 11, 2026, from 4 PM to 6 PM.

Hope they do a follow up piece after the reception. Would love to see photos of the actual show.

The impressionistic style with those colors she uses really does feel alive. Hard to explain unless you've seen it in person.

Parowan is close enough that I might make a little trip out of this. Cedar City has good restaurants to stop at after too.

My daughter is just starting to paint and this is exactly the kind of thing I want to take her to for inspiration.

Commission work for major institutions and still making time to mentor newer artists. That says a lot about her character.

SuzetteCRight? A lot of artists at that level get pretty guarded with their process. The fact that she runs retreats and mentors people shows she actually wants the art community to grow, not just her own career.

Glendale to Cedar City is not a short drive. She must really love the community to keep showing here.

kevin_dThat's a good point. It's probably close to an hour each way depending on where you're coming from in the valley. Shows she's genuinely invested in Cedar City's art scene.

I love that she talks about foundational principles over medium. That's the kind of philosophy that actually produces good art.

Marie OlsenTotally agree. I've seen so many students get obsessed with buying the right supplies and forget that technique and observation matter way more. The medium is just the vehicle.

Anyone know if the reception is free or do you have to buy a ticket?

      NancyFromSugarLoaf· Sep 11, 5:39 PM

JoshPGallery receptions like this are usually free to attend from what I've seen around here. I'd call Kolob Gallery ahead of time just to be sure though.

Oils, pastels, watercolors. The fact that she works in all three and does it well is pretty rare.

Heidi BarlowMy art teacher used to say most painters find one medium and stick to it forever. Jumping between all three and keeping the quality up in each one is genuinely hard to do.

Back in my day you had to drive all the way to Salt Lake to see anything like this. Nice to have it right here now.

Four to six PM is a tough time for people who work until five. Wish these receptions started a little later.

jimbo_cedarI hear you but 4 to 6 might actually work for folks who can leave a little early on a Friday. Still worth checking with Kolob Gallery to see if they do extended hours after.

111 South Main is easy to find. Parking on a Friday afternoon might be tricky though just a heads up.

Pastels that glow off the canvas is a perfect way to describe her work. Saw a piece at a show in St George once and couldn't stop staring.
