The 16-team lineup is finalized for the 4A boys volleyball state tournament, with six teams from Region 9 set to compete at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center in Orem this weekend.
In the opening round on May 2, Cedar, Snow Canyon, and Hurricane secured victories to advance. They join Crimson Cliffs, Desert Hills, and Pine View, who earned first-round byes due to their top-eight seeding.
Here's a recap of the recent matches and a preview of the upcoming tournament.
Cedar Triumphs Over Cottonwood
The No. 17-seeded Reds traveled to face No. 16 Cottonwood in the Salt Lake Valley. Cedar dominated the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-14. Despite Cottonwood taking the third set 25-15, Cedar clinched the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth.
Leading the Reds, Matt Johnson recorded 10 kills and 15 service points. Kai Hunter contributed 31 assists, while Nathan Guzman added four kills, three digs, and 13 service points, including two aces.
Snow Canyon Sweeps Deseret Peak
At home, the No. 9 Warriors (16-12) defeated No. 24 Deseret Peak in straight sets: 25-21, 25-16, and 25-12. Junior Nathan Harris led with 16 kills, and senior Warren Harper provided 31 assists.
Hurricane Upsets Mountain Crest
On the road, No. 19 Hurricane overcame No. 14 Mountain Crest with a 3-1 victory. After dropping the first set 23-25, Hurricane rallied to win the next three: 25-15, 25-21, and 25-14.
State Tournament Second-Round Matchups
The 4A state tournament begins Friday, May 8, at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center. Region 9 teams are scheduled as follows:
No. 9 Snow Canyon vs. No. 8 Timpanogos, 3:30 p.m.
No. 17 Cedar vs. No. 1 Mountain View, 3:30 p.m.
No. 2 Crimson Cliffs vs. No. 15 Stansbury, 5 p.m.
No. 3 Desert Hills vs. No. 19 Hurricane, 5 p.m.
No. 6 Pine View vs. No. 11 Provo, 5 p.m.
