Utah Native Keeps Grandfather's Peanuts Legacy Alive During Anniversary Year

Stephanie Revelli reflects on Charles Schulz's enduring impact as Cedar City celebrates with sold-out performances

Stephanie Revelli, a Utah native and granddaughter of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, reflected on his legacy.

The Pleasant Grove resident's heartfelt reflections come as communities across the state embrace the timeless appeal of her grandfather's beloved characters.

Just in Cedar City this month, Southern Utah University held a live "A Charlie Brown Christmas" show that sold out every night.

The special marked 60 years since the animated classic first aired, transforming into a cultural touchstone that spans generations.

"It relates to everyone," Revelli said. "I think every single person can read the comics and go, 'This is humanity. This is what we're all experiencing.'"

Her words capture the universal themes that made Charles Schulz's work resonate far beyond its Minnesota roots.

The 2024 anniversary celebrations have drawn remarkable community engagement throughout southern Utah.

They now have a traveling art exhibit featuring Christmastime comics, open until Jan. 3. It has already attracted over 3,000 visitors.

Local enthusiasm extends beyond the university campus, with a wellness center in Cedar City also starting "Snoopy the Musical" auditions in mid-January.

For Revelli's family, the holiday specials remain deeply personal traditions that connect them to Schulz's artistic vision.

She described their annual ritual of gathering with snacks to watch the Christmas special, a practice that mirrors countless families across America.

"As for the comic strips, there's a lot of his kids in those because he was drawing them as his kids were born and being born and growing up," Revelli said. "So it's fun to see those strips, and my mom will say, 'That was me. I said that funny thing, and he wrote it down.'"

This personal connection between family life and creative inspiration demonstrates how Schulz transformed everyday moments into universal storytelling.

The legacy continues through modern adaptations, with the Peanuts have now evolved into a movie and an Apple TV series created by family members.

Revelli's insights reveal the artistic passion that drove her grandfather's decades-long commitment to the comic strip.

"I think he honestly just loved to draw," Revelli said. "Like his, to draw was his just passion. It was his dream in life."

The Utah connection to Peanuts runs particularly deep through the Schulz family's Mormon heritage, with several descendants living throughout the state.

As communities celebrate both the 60th anniversary of the Christmas special and the 75th anniversary of the original comic strip, Revelli's reflections offer intimate glimpses into the man behind Charlie Brown's enduring appeal.

The sold-out Cedar City performances and overwhelming visitor response to the traveling exhibit demonstrate that Schulz's gentle humor and profound humanity continue resonating with new generations.
