Smith's Food and Drug Announces Two New Marketplace Stores in Cedar City |
Major Expansion Plans Set to Transform Local Retail Landscape |
Residents of Cedar City are set to experience a significant enhancement in their shopping options as Smith's Food and Drug unveils plans to establish two new Smith's Marketplace stores in the area.
The first of these expansive 123,000-square-foot stores is slated for construction on a currently vacant lot at 1247 South Main Street. This development represents a substantial $50 million investment, anchoring an 18-acre retail complex. Upon its anticipated completion in early 2027, the existing Smith's Food and Drug store at 633 South Main Street, which has served the community since 1996, will close. All current employees will be offered opportunities to transition to the new Marketplace location.
In addition to the South Main Street project, negotiations are underway for a second Smith's Marketplace on the north end of Cedar City, further demonstrating the company's commitment to the region's growth and development.
David Johnson, Economic Development Director for Cedar City and Iron County, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion: "Smith's is a long-term partner in our community, and we are thrilled by their further expansion and capital investment in Cedar City." He also acknowledged the efforts of local officials, stating, "Mayor Garth Green, the Cedar City Council, and the Office of Economic Development have worked diligently over the last few years to bring more grocery, retail, and dining options close to home for our residents and the surrounding communities in Iron County."
Kenny Kimball, President of Smith's Food and Drug, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the company's dedication to meeting the evolving needs of Cedar City's residents. "We're excited to bring a Marketplace to Cedar City to better meet the evolving needs of our customers," Kimball said. "This new store, and our plans for a future store, reflect our long-term commitment to anticipate and deliver expanded services, greater convenience, and an overall exceptional shopping experience to the Cedar City community."
These developments are part of Smith's broader strategic plan to serve the growing Cedar City community, reflecting a significant multi-million-dollar investment in full-line grocery services and the creation of hundreds of employment opportunities.
