This spring marks a defining moment as Southern Utah University celebrates its 127th annual commencement ceremony with a stellar lineup of valedictorians who exemplify academic excellence across seven colleges.
These remarkable students represent the pinnacle of academic achievement at SUU in Cedar City, each bringing unique perspectives and diverse accomplishments to their respective fields of study.
Leading the College of Performing and Visual Arts is Kira Wootton, a theater and communications double major with a psychology minor who made her mark by co-founding the campus Playwriting Club.
From Kaden Jensen representing the Walter Maxwell Gibson College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with his biology and chemistry degrees to Tim Arauza's journey through the College of Health Sciences with exercise science, each valedictorian brings a compelling story of dedication.
The Beverley Taylor Sorenson College of Education and Human Development celebrates Nakomi Yardley, whose elementary education focus stems from a lifelong passion for teaching and helping others reach their full potential.
The business world gains a new leader in Matt Cherry, valedictorian of the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business, whose accounting major path was inspired by transformative classroom experiences.
Philosophy major Hayden McCoy represents the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, while Josh Pinneker's aerospace and aviation sciences degree places him at the forefront of SUU's School of Aviation graduates.
The university's America 250 celebration theme adds historical significance to this year's graduation ceremony, with former Utah Governor Michael O. Leavitt serving as keynote speaker.
Leavitt's deep Cedar City roots make his selection particularly meaningful, as he was born in Cedar City and earned his degree from SUU.
Community members can join the celebration at the America First Event Center on Thursday, April 23, beginning at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 5:00 PM.
The ceremony promises to be a landmark event celebrating not only individual achievement but also America's 250th anniversary year with its focus on service and heritage.
These valedictorians represent the breadth of SUU's academic programs, from the creative arts to cutting-edge science, demonstrating the university's commitment to fostering excellence across all disciplines.
Their diverse backgrounds, from small Utah towns to major metropolitan areas, reflect the university's ability to attract and nurture talent from across the region and beyond.
Cedar City can take pride in hosting an institution that continues to produce graduates ready to make meaningful contributions to their communities and professions. |
