Four Rescued After Vehicle Buried in Cedar Canyon Snowstorm |
Visitors from Florida and Brazil stranded in deep snow near Cedar Breaks |
In a dramatic rescue operation, four individuals were safely evacuated after their vehicle became trapped under more than three feet of snow in Cedar Canyon. The incident occurred on Highway 148 near Cedar Breaks National Monument, a region known for its unpredictable winter conditions.
The Iron County Sheriff Search and Rescue (ICSSAR) team responded promptly to a distress call reporting a blue Jeep stranded in a substantial snow drift. Navigating treacherous roads laden with ice, black ice, and fallen rocks, the team established a staging area approximately three miles from the immobilized vehicle.
Utilizing snowmobiles and a Side x Side ATV, rescuers reached the scene and found the occupants—visitors from Florida and Brazil—attempting to reach Brian Head Resort. Fortunately, all four were in good health and were transported to Cedar City without incident.
The Jeep's front end was buried under more than three feet of snow, rendering it immovable. Additionally, a white truck was discovered about 30 feet away, submerged in over five feet of snow, though it was unoccupied. This incident underscores the importance of heeding weather advisories and being prepared for sudden changes in mountain conditions.
ICSSAR emphasizes that their primary mission is to preserve lives, not to recover vehicles. Travelers are urged to monitor forecasts, equip their vehicles appropriately, and carry essential supplies when venturing into mountainous areas.
This rescue serves as a stark reminder of the hazards posed by winter travel in Utah's high-elevation regions. Visitors are encouraged to exercise caution and prioritize safety during their travels. |
