East celebrates 75 years, prepares to move into new building |
School anniversary celebration and elementary school history highlighted |
East Elementary School recently marked its 75th anniversary with a heartfelt celebration that drew hundreds of attendees, including families, former staff, and alumni.
Guests wandered through the familiar hallways and classrooms, sharing memories and bidding farewell to the cherished building.
The current structure is set to be replaced by a modern, two-story facility slated to open this fall.
This new building will offer expanded space to accommodate the growing student population and will feature technological upgrades, increased parking, a spacious gymnasium-cafeteria, and innovative stadium-style seating.
During the open house, Jennifer Smith delved into the school's rich history, highlighting its construction in four distinct phases.
She noted the basement's unique feature—a shelter originally designed as a bomb shelter—which over the years has served various roles, from a spook alley to a faculty lounge, and has been the backdrop for numerous pranks.
Current Principal Mike Moyle expressed gratitude for the community's contributions to the school.
As attendees joined in singing the school song, he pledged to uphold many of the longstanding traditions in the new building.
Former Principal Steve Burton shared his joy in reconnecting with former colleagues, parents, and students.
Reflecting on his tenure at East, he invoked the African term Ubuntu, meaning "I am because we are."
He emphasized that the new building, made possible by the 2021 bond vote, embodies this spirit.
Thanks to the community's support, he remarked, students will benefit from the new facility for generations to come. |
