High School Football Players Shine in 3A South All-Region Honors

Local athletes from Cedar City schools earn top accolades in 3A South All-Region selections

Cedar High School's football team, fresh off their historic state championship victory, has seen twenty of its athletes honored in the 3A South All-Region selections. Among these, senior quarterback Everett Kelling was named Player of the Year, while senior linebacker Dax Wankier earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The selections were determined by votes from the region's coaches. In addition to Kelling and Wankier's top accolades, six Cedar players were named to the All-Region first team, six to the second team, and six received honorable mentions.

Cedar High's head coach, Tye Hiatt, expressed immense pride in his players, noting that of the twenty honorees, fifteen are seniors, three juniors, and two sophomores. He emphasized the dedication and hard work these athletes have demonstrated throughout the season.

Kelling showcased exceptional leadership and skill, completing 175 of 281 passes for 2,443 yards and 30 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing 114 times for 1,190 yards and 21 touchdowns. In the state championship game alone, Kelling amassed 225 rushing yards and four touchdowns, in addition to 159 passing yards and a touchdown.

Coach Hiatt praised Kelling's consistency and competitive spirit, highlighting his ability to lead the team to victory in crucial moments.

Defensively, Wankier was a formidable presence, recording 122 tackles, averaging 9.4 per game, along with 3.5 sacks and an interception. Hiatt commended Wankier's relentless effort and leadership on the defensive side, noting his daily commitment to improvement and his impactful plays throughout the season.

In addition to Cedar High's achievements, Canyon View High School also had notable recognitions. Senior quarterback Ryder Miller, linebacker Cooper Urie, and lineman Colt Rushton were named to the All-Region first team. The Falcons also had three players on the second team and eight receiving honorable mentions.

These accolades underscore the depth of talent and dedication present in Cedar City's high school football programs, reflecting a season of hard work and outstanding performances.
