Cedar City observes 75th anniversary of 'Miracle of Gapyeong,' plus 100 years of 'Triple Deuce

On Saturday morning, approximately 650 individuals gathered in Cedar City to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gapyeong, also known as the Miracle of Gapyeong.

 

The event honored the valor of the 213th Field Artillery Battalion, a unit composed largely of young men from Cedar City and surrounding areas, who played a pivotal role in this historic Korean War battle.

 

Remarkably, all members of the battalion returned home safely, a testament to their courage and resilience.

 

In his address, Cedar City Mayor Steve Nelson highlighted the enduring sister-city relationship between Cedar City and Gapyeong, South Korea, established in 2009.

 

He emphasized how this bond has fostered cultural and educational exchanges, strengthening ties between the two communities.

 

The ceremony also marked the 100th anniversary of the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery Regiment, known as the "Triple Deuce," and the 20th anniversary of their deployment to Iraq.

 

These milestones underscore a century of dedicated service and sacrifice by the unit.

 

Among the distinguished attendees was 94-year-old Korean War veteran Frank Sweeting, who was honored for his service.

 

Community members paid their respects by laying flowers at the base of the Korean War Memorial, a solemn tribute to those who served.

 

The event featured performances by the Cedar Middle School band, adding a poignant musical backdrop to the commemoration.

 

In a symbolic gesture, 200 East Street was designated as "Gapyeong Way," further solidifying the connection between Cedar City and Gapyeong.

 

Reflecting on the day's events, Mayor Nelson remarked, "This commemoration not only honors our veterans but also celebrates the enduring friendship between Cedar City and Gapyeong.

 

It's a testament to the shared history and mutual respect that bind our communities together."
